Bursting through a seam on the rail in mid-stretch, Dynamic Sky and Cornelio Velasquez pulled away to win the Grade 3, $250,000 Red Smith Handicap at Aqueduct Racetrack on Saturday, the colt’s first victory since a win by disqualification this June.
“I had a good trip; I saved ground all the way, and I had a lot of horse at the quarter-pole,” Velasquez said. “I asked, and he gave me everything.”

Favored Big Blue Kitten trailed the field and put in a strong late move to grab second; Margano was third. Final time for the mile and three-eighths turf event was 2:18.85.
The last time John Oxley’s Dynamic Sky crossed the wire first was in last summer’s Plate Trial, a race before he finished third to Midnight Aria in the $1 million Queen’s Plate. The Mark Casse trainee has now come out victorious in five of 20 lifetime starts.
“He got a great trip today, and everything seemed to come together for him,” said Kathryn Sullivan, assistant trainer to Casse. “He didn’t have the best start in the [Canadian] International, which put him behind in the race, but today everything went exactly as planned. Cornelio took him off the pace a little bit and had him sitting perfectly. When that hole opened, he just went right on through and had a ton of horse. It was perfect; you couldn’t ask for a better trip.”
Bred in Ontario by Arosa Farms, Dynamic Sky is a 4-year-old son of Sky Mesa out of the Distorted Humor mare Murani.
