Domenic Liscio and Danny Iandoli’s Lucky Score arrived at the Sept. 25 $180,000 Vigil Stakes (G3) without a stakes win on his stat sheet. On a rainy afternoon at Woodbine, the Willie Armata trainee netted his milestone victory in impressive fashion.
A four-year-old of Eclipse Award Champion Lookin At Lucky out of the Royal Academy mare Miss Matzo was bred in Ontario by Shannondoe Farm principals James and Janeane Everatt and their daughter Arika Everatt-Meeuse.
Under jockey Leo Salles, Lucky Score was unhurried early, trailing the field behind a quarter in :22.77 and half-mile in :44.96. As the field turned for home, 15-1 shot Rockcrest opened a 1 1/2-length lead. There was a lot of work left to do for Lucky Score, who was steered six-wide into the final turn.
Rolling down the stretch, the son of Lookin at Lucky collared a game Rockcrest and drew away for a 1 1/4-length win in a time of 1:08.63 for the six furlongs on the synthetic main track.
Rockcrest was a neck ahead of Secret Reserve , who edged Clayton by a nose for third.
Lucky Score ($14.70) collected his fifth win from 12 starts and increased his earnings to CA$291,737.
“I’ve been involved in horse racing for maybe four or five years,” Liscio said. “The bottom line is I want to thank Leo (Salles), but if there’s one guy I want to thank the most, it’s (trainer) Ralph Biamonte. He picked this horse out, we had him with him, and he did a lot of work as a baby with him.”
