Caren, a three-year-old daughter of Society’s Chairman, was nominated for a pair of Sovereign Awards for the second consecutive year. She is up for honors a champion Three-Year-Old Filly and champion Turf Female.
Bred by the Everatt family of Shannondoe Farm, Caren began her 2016 campaign with three stakes placings, including a runner up finish in the Grade 3 Selene Stakes on May 15.
Following a third-place run in the $500,000 Woodbine Oaks, in which she led until deep stretch, Caren reeled off four straight victories. She first used her speed to wire the fields in the final two legs of the Canadian Triple Tiara, the Bison City Stakes and the Wonder Where Stakes a mile and one quarter.
Trainer Michael DePaulo put the Grade 3 Ontario Colleen on the agenda next and Caren would not be denied, holding on for a gusty nose victory. For an encore, she wired the field in the subsequent Carotene Stakes.
Racing in the colors of Robert Marzilli, Caren has a career record of nine wins from 15 starts and earnings of $800,196. She was also nominated for a pair of Sovereign Awards for her stellar juvenile campaign in 2015. She was runner up to Horse of the Year Catch a Glimpse in the voting for champion Two-Year-Old Filly and was third in the voting for Champion Female Sprinter agains older runners.
The 42nd Sovereign Awards will be presented in a dinner at Palais Royal on April 13. Horse of the Year finalists will be announced that evening and Caren is among the favorites to secure that honor.
